RUIZ CASTILLO SCHOOL
Ruiz Castillo is the largest school in Diria and serves approximately 550 students between preschool and 6th grade. The school district administration is housed at this school. This school runs in the morning and the afternoon and has several classes for each grade. The students of this school are a bright and beautiful group of children who unfortunately attend a school that is desperately under-funded and under-equipped.

Removing and building new drop ceilings

Years ago drop ceilings of plywood were build in this school and have become a health hazard for the children. The ceilings are now rotten and falling down. The rotting ceilings have triggered allergies in some of the children and also contain bee nests.

Rebuilding the kitchens

The current cooking facilities at Ruiz Castillo are non functional. This area is to be used to cook the daily school lunch of rice and beans and corn cereal. The schools currently do not receive enough food from the government to last.

A new kitchen structure needs to be built including a gas stove, which will decrease the environmental impact of cooking over a wood burning stove. The building will be large enough to store the food safely as well.

The school also requires the donations of pots and pans in which to cook.

The total cost of the rebuild - $3000.00

Reinforcing the play area and providing play equipment

The current play area is located on a hill that borders the school buildings. In the rainy season the hill erodes and the play area becomes a muddy mess. The hill needs to be reinforced with a retaining wall and the children would greatly enjoy the addition of some play equipment.

Cost of reinforcing the play area - $1500.00

Cost of swing set or jungle gym - $550.00

Building new latrines

The current latrines at Ruiz Castillo are unsanitary and falling apart. It is necessary to build a more solid cement structure that is more easily kept clean.

ANNE FRANK SCHOOL

Anne Frank is located in a rural area outside of Diria down a long, unpaved, and very rough road. This school serves approximately 250 students from pre school through the third year of high school. This school also offers evening classes for older teenagers and adults in the area who did not complete primary school when they were children. The children of this school live in an extremely impoverished community. The nearest water source is a 2 kilometer walk away and the water from that source is not safe to drink.

Many of the children suffer from water bourne disease and many also are unable to attend to school as they spend their mornings transporting water to their homes. The school itself also suffers from the lack of water and is unable to provide safe drinking water to the children or have water for maintaining the cleanliness of the school. The school structure is also not large enough to handle the number of students and the director reports that she is unsure how they will house the number of children who will be attending the school in the next school year.

Building a new potable water system

A potable water system for the school and the surrounding community. The number one concern for this school and community is the lack of access to potable water. This project is currently being assessed by a hydrologist and by the local government.

Replace and repair 2 school roofs

The roofs of two of the buildings at Anne Frank are buckled and falling apart. Funding is needed to replace the roofs on these buildings.

Building new double classroom and kitchen

This building which currently houses the preschool and non-functional kitchen is falling apart and is too small to house the number of students who attend the school. A new double classroom and kitchen could be built in it’s place.

Supply sports and play equipment
Escuela Anne Frank is situated on a very small lot with very little extra space for the children to play. Currently the children only have a small patch of cement to play on during recess and no play equipment. Very few children own balls or toys in this area and often there will be only one old tennis ball that all the children are playing with. The donation of money to purchase balls, jump ropes, and other play equipment would be welcomed by the children.

Cost of sporting / outdoor equipment - $250.00
